Helpful Hints

Frequency response
A flat frequency response has been the main goal of microphone companies for the last three or four decades. In the fifties, mics were so bad that console manufacturers began adding equalizers to each input to compensate. This effort has now paid off to the point were most professional microphones are respectably flat, at least for sounds originating in front. The major exceptions are mics with deliberate emphasis at certain frequencies that are useful for some applications. Problems in frequency response are mostly encountered with sounds originating behind the mic.

Fast Facts

Microphones

In 1827, Sir Charles Wheatstone was the first person to coin the phrase "microphone." In 1876, Emile Berliner invented the first microphone used as a telephone voice transmitter. At the U.S. Centennial Exposition, Emile Berliner had seen a Bell Company telephone demonstrated and was inspired to find ways to improve the newly invented telephone. The Bell Telephone Company was impressed with what the inventor came up with and bought Berliner's microphone patent for US$50,000.

High Fidelity
Hi-Fi or high-fidelity recording began in Germany during the Second World War. The Reichs-Rundfunk-Gesellschaft (German radio) produced experimental stereo FM music broadcasts in Berlin around 1941. The radio station used a customized magnetophon, the AC-bias German tape recorder made by AEG, a German electronics company.
