AudiaFLEX installed in Darwin’s Supreme Court

The Supreme Court in Darwin was designed with one court case in mind – the Falconio Trial. This is  the trial of murder suspect in the case of the British tourist who was kidnapped and killed in the Northern Territory some years ago. The trial is expected to run for several years and is one of the highest profile cases to take place in Australia in recent times.

Rod Louey Gung was asked to be the consultant on the project and he specified Audia’s AudiaFLEX to be used for all of the processing, automatic mixing and the acoustic echo cancellation (AEC).

The Court required many high tech features including a touch screen control, video and telephone conferencing, four-track audio recording on hard disc along with an automatic camera switch operation.

AudiaFLEX was first employed to control the automatic mixing of the 18 microphones in the system. Eighteen channels of AEC were used in the three AudiaFLEX units in the system. The AEC eliminated the acoustic echo that occurs in a telephone or video conference. AudiaFLEX allows for fine tuning of the individual reference points in the microphones to eliminate any possibility of echo in the system.

The three AudiaFLEX units are linked together via CobraNet, allowing networking between the units. All of the AudiaFLEX units are assigned a TCP/IP address and connected to the building LAN via their Ethernet port. This allows remote connection to the system from anywhere in the building.

There is a logic box employed with the AudiaFLEX units that allows the Court’s Judge to have access to push button controls for the microphones in the room. The logic outputs from the logic box are used to control camera-switching operations, to allow switching to a certain camera when someone speaks through a microphone.

The courtroom also uses Biamp MCA8050 amplifiers in the system. These are eight channel amplifiers that provide 50Watts of power per channel into 4 ohms.

Helpful Hints

So-called low impedance headphones may vary from 75 ohms up to about 150 ohms. Phones in this impedance range may be directly plugged into the headphone jack routinely found on recording and playback equipment. Higher impedances, such as 600 ohms, are more useful in studio installations where many units may be wired in parallel for studio monitoring applications.
